One of the most important things you can have in business is a good support network.
Because being in business is tough. Juggling a million different things and trying to fit in time for your family and yourself as well.
My local business women’s network celebrated ten years last week. Life members awards were given out to long-serving committee members (myself included) and speeches were made. I’d like to share what one of those committee members said as it really resonated with me.
She said that in the early days she needed to know that she was not the only person trying to juggle a career, family, sports commitments and remain sane.
“I remember I raced into a meeting, flustered and feeling my life was out of control, I would look around the room and think ‘I can do this’, I’m not the only one trying to make it all work.”
Going to the network meetings made her realise that she wasn’t alone. Everyone else was in the same boat and they were all there to support each other. Now her children are all grown up and she’s a grandmother (a lot can happen in ten years!) and she has been able to introduce her daughter to the network. That is so cool!
Here are some of the other highlights from the committee when speaking about what the network has meant for them.
‘There’s always someone I can turn to for advice.’
‘Working with 2 blokes in a shed you can imagine my thrill at being in a room full of business women. Common ground instantly.’
’I love sharing information and hearing about so many people doing amazing things.’
‘The women I have met have inspired me over the years. Their strength, their commitment to their businesses and their love of our town. We have laughed and cried and supported each other through hard times in our business and careers, birth, deaths, weddings and I have met lifelong friends along the way.’
‘I’ve loved having the opportunity to learn from other business women’s experiences.’
‘It’s been a safe, friendly and encouraging environment that accepted and nurtured me as I learnt to juggle the demands of family and business. I have been supported, mentored and have connected with like minded women… I have also made some wonderful and treasured friendships.’
This is the sort of support you need if you are in business. Having a network you can turn to for strength and advice can make all the difference in making it or not.
It doesn’t have to be anything as formal as my business women’s network. It might be your family or your best friends. It might be an informal group of business women you know either online or in real life. It doesn’t matter as long as you have someone to connect with.
Because even though you can do it on your own, its a whole lot easier, more fulfilling and fun to have like-minded people to share the journey with you.
