Systems are one of the best tools you can have in your arsenal to create more time in your day. But they also have another benefit – they create more head space – more space in your brain.
I read an article a while back which talked about the way the brain functions when you make decisions. There was a lot of science speak, but what it boiled down to was this…
The part of the brain used to make decisions is a limited resource, meaning there is only so much of it available each day. That part of the brain is also responsible for problem solving as well as focusing on specific tasks. In fact, any thought process that require conscious effort.
They did an experiment that showed that when this resource is used up by an activity such as grocery shopping (lots of small decisions) it is harder to solve algebra problems later in the day.
Or more practically, if you spend your day making decisions then when you get home you’ll be wiped and even deciding on what to have for dinner will be too hard!
Who else has this problem?
They also showed that subjects with overtaxed brains made worse decisions. When the ‘resource’ is depleted, like a muscle that is overused, the brain becomes less effective.
The scientists said “If we’ve just spent lots of time focusing on a particular task, exercising self-control or even if we’ve just made lots of seemingly minor choices, then we probably shouldn’t try to make a major decision.”
So put systems in place so you don’t have to think or decide about the easy stuff. Create space in your brain, leaving your brain power free for other, more important things.
